I’ve been following your posts about cell phones avidly, especially since our timeline to become nomads was accelerated. My current dilemma is that I have a payment plan on my phone that saves several hundred dollars because I traded in my old phone—but I still have a couple of years on the payment plan. I lose that discount if I pay off the phone now so I can unlock it. I’m debating the options (bite the bullet and just pay full price to get my phone unlocked? Get a second phone through Tello?), and hope to have a solution within the next couple of months!
Our phones are not unlocked. What do you think about just buying a local phone with a data plan so we can use Google Maps and access the web, but then using our primary phones when we can get WiFi? Is it somewhat cost effective?
That's certainly an idea. It might be cheaper, but I couldn't say since I don't know what you're paying or what another phone would cost. Perhaps you could just pay off your phones to get them unlocked?
We could pay them off, but we have a 0% interest payment plan and we like using their money instead of ours. Will try purchasing a phone in the next country and report back on how it works out.
I have a question. I have both Saily and Tello. I also use WhatsAp for some calls and text. My Tello plan includes a measure of data and is set as primary, for phone and text of course. How do I set my Android phone, or these accounts, to make use of data on both Tello and Saily and prevent topping up either until out of data on both?
You'll need to go into your Saily sim settings. It will ask you which sim you want to use for calls, data, text. Ditto for the Tello sim. I believe both also have a setting to not auto top up. If so, turn it off.

I guess they get your money one way or another :-(. Lmk how your idea works!
Great tips Chris thank you!
Thanks Matt
